7 West End Barns, Northwold

This is one of the four units of the second phase of development that provided privacy and seclusion, being located off the beaten track. The dwelling was designed using the same principles as the three dwellings to the north: a traditional barn style, constructed in chalk with brick quoins and window detailing and clay pantiles to the roof. A beautiful brick and chalk frontage, with an element of full-height cladding and part chalk western gable, gave this property its traditional Norfolk barn appearance.

The client wanted a modern appearance whilst respecting the character of the area with a better living flow. Hence an open-plan kitchen/living/dining space flooded with light by the large bi-folding doors was proposed.

The primary design considerations in this project relate to the impact of the development on the character and appearance of the conservation area, local residents’ amenities, spatial characteristics of the area and highway issues.
